If you plan to read only one book on Viet Nam, make it this one! If you are serious about military history at all, you must read it, even if you have no interest in the Viet Nam period.
This book covers much more than just debunking a few individuals that
claimed to be Nam vets, it debunks many, many popular myths about the war. It
will open your eyes to the study of military history and how it is done.
Trust me on this one. This is one astounding book.
No one should be allowed to teach a class on Viet Nam without having read this book. The way pop culture has crept into the "history of the Viet Nam war" is just amazing. Read about things like why most grunts were not from poor minority groups, why Angent Orange probably does not casue birth defects, and why many elite SF/specops vets you meet might just not be what they claim...
25 years later- you think you know about the war? I doubt it.
Not unless you've read this book. A Better War by Lewis Sorley looks at
the post-tet war. the one that General Abrams ran. It makes a very good claim
that in 1971 we essentially had won the war, but threw it away. Very well done,
and I can not recommend it any higher. Read it before taking one of those pop
classes on the war in Viet Nam and irritate the teacher. But please note: this
is a very well researched and documented book, not some wannabe war vet's
bragging.

I just can not say enough about this book, and wonder why so much junk gets
printed, but stuff like this goes ignored.
