The Lions of Cantigny, The Black Lions, the Wumpus Cats

The Lion is taken from the coat of arms of Picardy, France. The 28th fought the first action in WW1 where an American unit attacked under American command at Cantigny in Picardy.

The 28th Infantry was the first American Infantry Regiment to land in France in WW1 (serving with the 1st Division), and the first Infantry Regiment to attack under American Command. Transferred to the 8th Infantry Division in WW2, the Regiment was returned to the 1st Infantry Division for Vietnam. It is currently a training unit at Ft. Jackson SC.

Motto: "First at Vicksburg"

The blue and white bars represent the old and new colors of the infantry. The General's shoulder straps represent the two General officers the unit has produced (Sherman was the first Colonel, and Sheridan an original captain in the Regiment).

121st Infantry Regiment

"The Grey Bonnet Regiment"

Activated 20 December 1860

(as the independent Volunteer Battalion of Macon, Georgia)

Motto: "Faciendum Est" ( It shall be done)

The insignia is an"old gray bonnet", taken from the official Regimental song of that name. This unit crest was approved 9 August 1928.
